Our Story

Sweetsmith Bakery first opened its doors in 2004 and began serving the West Ashley community delicious treats for all occasions. In 2011, Brenda Throckmorton took ownership and continued the tradition of made-from-scratch and lovingly decorated cakes, cookies, pies, and other sweets.

Brenda was a Food Scientist for 24 years in Cincinnati, Ohio and has developed many products for food companies. She developed the first gel paste food coloring for a local Cincinnati company and the national brands copied. Brenda also ran a bakery business out of her home for 12 years. She has always loved “playing with her food”.

She and her husband Marc fell in love with Charleston when their son Jeff went to the Citadel.  They decided to move here when their daughter Laura went off to college in  Munster, Germany. Brenda's long time dream of having her own bakery business has finally come true.

We remain dedicated to high quality and great taste.

Local favorites include chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, carrot cake, red velvet cake, and the perfectly balanced SweetSmith Black & White cake.
